Hourglass Liquid Motion - Timer

The descending bubbles have a soothing and mesmerising effect that provides gentle visual stimulation. This timer has two bright coloured drops that rain down slowly when flipped, almost like a lava lamp or hourglass sand timer.

Visual timers relax our visual sense creating a sense of calm and have many more benefits for the individual.

Teaches the concept of time

Some children and teenagers, especially if they are on the Autism Spectrum, struggle with learning the concept of time. When we ask them to do an activity for 10 minutes, when they do not know how long 10 minutes is, it can seem like forever and cause frustration, anger and even anxiety. A visual timer enables them to visually see how fast the timer is going and how much time is left before the activity is over. When they ask how long before they can finish, we can point to the timer (encouraging independence and motivation) and they can see for themselves.

Eases changes in routine and transitions

Changes in routine and schedule can also be tricky to learn, especially when you are on the Autism Spectrum. We can easily explain that when the timer finishes it will be time to move onto another activity, preparing them for the transition. It is important to allow enough time, by using the correct timer, that they will need to successfully pack up and move on to the next activity. It avoids an abrupt change and the negative emotions sometimes associated with the change.
